valdeztke 01-17-2007, 10:09 AM Just built a page - that is on an ako.army.mil server and has a riduculouiously long URL ...
To fix this I went to godaddy.com and bought a catchy domain name...now what do I need to do to just make this a simple redirect?
I dont need to get into the FTP or anything right? Just a DNS resolve fix?
Help im so lost..
If you know godaddy then walk me through it. PS Its Windows based not linux.
Joeychgo 01-17-2007, 10:27 AM You handle the redirect via your hosting account - If you have cPanel - I can help - I dont know how go daddy hosting does it - You could also redirect a simple url on your current site - i.e. www.vbullletin-faq.com/specialpage (http://www.vbullletin-faq.com/specialpage) could be redirected to http://www.vbulletin-faq.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6657
valdeztke 01-17-2007, 10:35 AM I want www.mobsupport.us to point to https://www.us.army.mil/suite/page/378705
We'll see how this is going to work once godaddy lets me start the hosting process.. its still pending now.
Joeychgo 01-17-2007, 11:07 AM then you redirect www.mobsupport.us (http://www.mobsupport.us/) to https://www.us.army.mil/suite/page/378705 (https://www.us.army.mil/suite/page/378705)
Thats done in the hosting side... Im not sure how godaddy hosting panel is set up - but you want to do a 301 (permanant) redirect -
Peggy 01-17-2007, 11:18 AM So it was www.mobsupport.us (http://www.mobsupport.us) that you purchased at godaddy?
I needed to do this with the domains that I purchased to point to my sites.
At godaddy you'll activate the free hosting that comes with your domain name. Then once activated you'll create a .htaccess file and put this in it:
Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule (.*) htt p://w ww.themesbydesign.net/$1 [R=301,L]
The part that's in red, you'll change to the long domain name that you want it to point to.
Then, you'll upload this file to your account, using godaddy's ftp client, and save
That's it!
valdeztke 01-17-2007, 11:38 AM Thanks Joe and Peggy. Im going to give it a shot tonight!
Big Dan 01-17-2007, 11:49 AM GoDaddy has forwarding options. If you just want the domain forwarded, you don't need hosting.
Just open the domain control panel tick the box next mobsupport.us and hit on the forward icon (https://images.godaddy.com/dcc/v4/gd/button_nav_forward.gif)
Simple & Easy ;)
Peggy 01-17-2007, 12:11 PM I did that too Danny, but was told that, from an SEO standpoint, that wasn't a good thing to do?
I was instructed to activate the hosting account and upload the 301 redirect to the account.

Hmm, I thought it was automatically a 301. I'm thinking of 1&1 which allows for either an HTTP redirect or a 301.
Ignore my last post, valdeztke. :)
Peggy 01-17-2007, 01:12 PM Hunny I could be wrong too. I'm just going by what Chris and another person at Zoints SEO told me.
I had all of the domains just forwarded to my sites, but they told me I needed to do the 301 redirect with the .htaccess file pointed to my site.

Wow, I am totally lost :)
So who wants to do it for me?
I used the automated system yet I got nothing. This is a military site for our troops that are deploying, are deployed, and will eventually deploy. Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks!
valdeztke 01-18-2007, 05:27 AM Thanks again for all your help I did get it to work - using Danny's method. I don't know how to create a .htaccess file.
On another note -
As of right now I've been hit pretty hard to finish putting together this site for my military command.
Now its all built through an intergrated army system that you dont have access to but as you can see I did buy a more userfriendly domain name www.mobsupport.us
you wont be able to access this site but I have some questions regarding the searching of it.
Basically we want Soldiers to be able to search keywords in google/yahoo and have our suppot site come up. Things like mobilization, mob, and other military specific terms.
What needs to happen to make this happen? Will I need to host some full site page on the newly purchased domain name and include all the keywords? I dont know anything about spiders and keyword title line inputs, etc ... Firearms I know .....websites - I'm still learning
Your help is desperately needed - not only for myself but for the troops that are slated to deploy in the near future.
Thanks
Peggy 01-18-2007, 06:15 AM now that's a hard one hunny. In order for the site to come up in the search engines with favorite keywords, the spiders need to be able to crawl the site. But since it's a private site, I don't see that happening.
I hope someone else has some better information than I do.

I guess thats what I mean ... could I build a generic HTML page that would time out to the private site? In that HTML page I would have all of the key spider food words
