This is my first post for my first forum on the first day of working on my forum myself for the first time. We all have our first ones and the first ones are usually not the easy ones. I intend to build my forum on the lines of www.vbulletin-faq.com. A index page with a left nav bar and then the forum with the left nav bar too. I searched here quite a bit but couldnt find any info that would give me some detailed info on the forums with a customized left nav bars like www.vbulletin-faq.com.
I found out that vBFAQ was built using vba. However, I still would very much appreciate if someone can outline some of the basics in a little more detail than usual. I am a real beginner for this stuff and have no knowledge of anything related to forums. I think I know I am asking for a little too much but any help would be very much appreciated. I am fairly comfortable with computers and online business. But this forum thing is my first. Thanks very much in advance.

I think i was using the wrong words. I found somewhere on this forum the correct words of side column or left side column or right side column. I was using the wrong words of left navigation bar and right side navigation bar. Those words dont seem too wrong but they were not the correct words and thats why I was not getting anywhere.
Thanks all for the great work here. I will be around and hopefully in a year time, I may answer questions as well. All the best.

Hello azuma, welcome to vbFAQ! We were all new at one time, so relax, you'll learn! (someone was saying that to me 2 years ago ;) )
The front page (called a homepage or portal page) here is strictly html and tables (I think). You can achieve the same look for your site in one of 3 ways - html and tables, with a cmps, or with a hack at vBulletin.org called Webtemplates (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=103076).
On the forum, the left side column (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=117988) is on the forumhome only. It can be used for all kinds of things - navigation, links, advertising, affiliates, etc. Imagination is all it takes. The hack is quite easy to install and edit to your liking.
If you have anymore questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

Hi Peggy,
Thanks very much for the detailed guidance. I feel alot more confident that I will do better job now after reading your guidance. Its been a bad sunday late afternoon. The web host dreamhost.com had a complete power outage and there was no way for my customers to contact me. The forum is hosted in the UK and the purpose is to keep in tough with my customers. Its not yet ready but when it is, you will definitely will find out a guy from Tokyo asking for help here.
All the best
Azuma

But your looking at the homepage - http://www.vbulletin-faq.com
That is not a vB page, but a hand coded HTML page.

Right - he wants to design his site to look the same as our home page and forum.
I intend to build my forum on the lines of www.vbulletin-faq.com (http://www.vbulletin-faq.com/). A index page with a left nav bar and then the forum with the left nav bar too.
