There is no easy way to tell you how to create a style. It takes weeks and months of learning and practice.

If you look in the vBulletin manual available in your members area at vbulletin.com, there are some basic guidelines there. Additionally, you can download a simple css-based style from our free styles section here, and study the MainCSS area of the style.

You'll also need a graphics/image editor such as photoshop, or Paint Shop Pro, or any of the popular image editors, to design your images.

The "industry standard" seems to be Adobe Photoshop.

Me - I have to be different :) Personally I use a managerie of various softwares -
Paint Shop Pro 7
The Logo Creator
The Web Graphics Creator
and I'm just getting into Xara Xtreme

Which is the start of a very good defense on why some skins are not free. ;)

Photoshop is WAY out of my league. I do have it - got it at an auction on eBay, but the learning curve is so steep, when you're a single mom, with a VERY active young son, work parttime, and trying to make a second income online - there's little time to learn anything difficult, lol.

Off the shelf, Photoshop costs hundreds of $, while Paint Shop Pro is somewhere around $79. At least it was before Corel bought them out. Xara is about the same.

The logo creator and the webgraphics creator, are somewhere around $40, I believe. You can check it out here - The Logo Creator (http://affiliates.digitalriver.com/z/22/CD79255).
They have fantastic support and a forum to post on as well.
