I'm contemplating the same on my vBulletin Support (http://www.cpurigs.com/) forum as well. I think we are close enough that the template changes are pretty well set.
I'll let ya know if I do it. I'm probably going to be up to my eyeballs in vBPicGallery (http://www.cpurigs.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=32) support today however.

On the release thread at .com, Mike Sullivan stated that there will be no more changes to this. That IF there are anymore releases before gold, they'll be for bug fixes only. And at this point, they are seeing very few, and only minor, bugs.
So I feel pretty safe.

I like that for three reasons. You are on PHP5, you are on a different server then my testforum, and you will be using 3.6 live with vBPicGallery, the photo gallery for vBulletin.
Holler at me when you are going to dig into this.
