I was thinking the same thing Peggy. I was just organizing my smilies yesterday and adding some more. Thought I would categorize them before I had 300+

Good idea. I have the smilies here semi-categorized. If I add more, I'll do it better.
On the site I used to own, I had them micro-managed, lol. We had over 500 smilies.

A couple questions:

1. What categories have you guys gone with?

2. When you re-org your smilies, VB keeps all the "links" to the posted smilies intact, right? Meaning any smilies already posted will still be there even if you move the smilie from "general" to "sports" category, for example?

Thanks.

Yes it keeps them intact. I create the new category and then use the mass move.

I have right now, generic, welcome, signs, and then misc. I plan on making just a couple more categories when I sit down and add more smilies. Right now I'm to busy saying hi to these new people.

Yes your previously-posted smilies will still show after you've reorganized them.

When I have a large amount of smilies, as I did on my former site, I tend to break them up into categories that people would easily think of, then I group categories together by similarity rather than having 50 categories (i.e. angry/frustrated/vent/hurt, angels/devils, good morning/goodnight, etc). Some people go a step further and alphabetize the categories, but I prefer to list the cats according to popularity/similarity. You'll see what I mean below. It makes everything easier on my members and they appreciate it when posting.

Categories I typically use when I feel I've got enough uploaded to need categorizing (usually 100 or more):

General is always first - that's for your default smilies that show in your text editor.

Followed by -

Hello/welcome/new
Happy/laughing/excited/dancing
Angry/vent/hurt/frustrated
Thank you/Please/You're Welcome
Mischevious/Sarcastic
Good Morning/Goodnight/Goodbye
Congrats/celebrations/birthday
Friends/Flirty/Love (My fav category ;) )
Signs
angels/devils
Holidays
Miscellaneous

I need to find more but I hate adding them because the mass add has NEVER worked for me. To much of a pain to do it individually.

mass add works just fine for me. You can also upload a folder full of smilies to your server, then type the url of the folder in where it indicates. But you still have to go through naming, giving them a code and moving them to a cat.

yup that never worked either lol. I read all through vb.com back and forth and it never worked. No biggie, I just only add 5 at a time instead of 100.

After reading this thread yesterday I surfed around for smilies and found a few, plus a generator that let me make my own. I've never uploaded smilies to subaruoutback.org so it took me a while to hunt for the correct directory to put them in. But they are now available.

Did you ever create a smiley based on a board member? On the Outback board we have a member who likes to go offroading in West Virginia, he's known for cutting the bumpers for better clearance and destroying an engine by fording a stream. So in the smiley generator I combined one of the insane-looking eye sets with a coonskin cap *G*
