It's all about the members!

Hello,

So my members look like they are on the verge of having one of their regularly scheduled mini-meltdowns. I took a bunch of pieces from their threads and tried to make a constructive thread out of it "How to make the site better (http://www.wnypoker.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21992)". I even tried to include some deep linking into the suggestions. What other suggestions do you have? What do you do when your members start fighting? Post a note? Ignore it? I try not to comment inline and get sucked into the drama, that's why the separate thread. Just wondering what your thoughts are. Thanks!

Some newb comes in and stirs it up - the stalwarts rally and the regulars get stronger.
It's when the stalwarts get up each others nose that the real trouble starts, it seems.

My site is a bit of an onion. There's a forum that only comes up for 50+ post members and has proved very useful on the odd occassion when stalwarts clash. First, I shunt the posts from the fight into this special forum and then at least I can weave some magic without folks that don't understand the personalities involved from sticking their oar in. From there, it takes some skill. But like it or not, some leadership needs to happen fast.

Let 'em fight! Geeze, don't try to micromanage your forums. If they have a beef, let 'em have it out. Just make it clear that it is not to spill over into any other area, it has to stay there. The only time I ever step in is when they start calling each other names or using God**** or the *F* word. Gotta keep it semi clean in case any kiddies browse by. But then again, if it's in a private forum, oh hell let 'em go at it.

It adds some spark to the forum, people get involved, posts go through the roof - hahaha...

I wanna get a good debate going here.... let's see now, what kind of s*** can I start....

Let 'em fight!

I have "rules" on my forum which include no flaming, no excessive foul language, and the like. With that, I LOVE a good debate. If one member resorts to name calling or out right trolling, that member gets an infraction.

If it starts getting close, I may give a general warning in the thread, but generally allow it all.

Controversy == unique content :D especially if you encourage using reliable sources and good speeling/gramar :p

Yep that's what I said above - well, kind of - excessive foul language.
What I don't understand is why/how people can't get the hang of attacking an idea or opinion without attacking the person expressing it. I mean I've seen so many debates turn into personal attacks, you have to wonder about their mentality.

Attack/debate/argue the idea or opinion, not the person.

If the Birthday field in there Profile states there over 18 then they can see the forum on the board but it says private and to contact a Bomb Squad (Super MOD) for the password to enter

Works great
