I am trying to figure out what it will cost me to get set up. Now I know it will be $160 for the license. Then I just download it? And I know I need to get a host (been shopping around). Is there any other costs that I have to put up to get started? I have a phpbb freebie board that I have with my friends but I am thinking about doing something bigger and better :)

Depends on how nice you want the site to look, and how many features up front. Some admins will go nuts on the looks and features before they have a single post in any of the forums. Other admins will want to see the content and members pick up before they invest any serious money into their forums, including vBulletin (start with a free forums package). So, what do you want from the site on Day 1, and we can probably point you in the right direction.

^^agreed. We paid for a few products. But you can start with a good host, vbulletin and maybe a skin. That should get you on your way. I have a good host, PM me and I will send you details.

Find a free skin that you really like, and ask the designer to make a custom header image for you. Most will. I know I will.

I went with the cheaper vb, does that make a difference?

the leased license? Nope. Just means that you'll have to pay for it again when it expires.

Get a full vb.
Get a nice vb friendly skin (Peggy has loads of nice ones).
Don't be afraid to try things.
As it is my Mom's Birthday today (i have stopped taking on new good causes), i will if you want it offer you hosting on my dedi. Basically you get whatever you ask for ie unlimited bandwidth, space, db, ftp, parked domains etc.
There are no big conditions, just that you remain as a hobby site (not commercial) and you just give credit to your host somewhere. Oh, and your initial url wil be www.yourname.myname.net but this will easily be changed once you register a domain of your own and point it to my nameserver.
Support?? well i'm just a hobbist, the server is running fine, any probs i just refer back to liquid web (they host the dedi) who are damn good, nothing is set in stone, i normally change anything you want.

Full license means you can run it on your website in definately (subject to any violations lol)
The 30 (us dollars) refers to support after the first year where you can download any upgrades to the software and get priorty support. As an owner of a few licenses i just normally let them run out and then pay to upgrade them as and when i really need to to.

I know I'm just saying it's kind of rediculous to keep paying 85$ If you know it is something you are going to stick with.

I was planning on getting the full version. To start I don't need anything too fancy. But where is a list of the "add ons" you talk about? I would like a nice skin and will be checking out Peggy's collection.
