Ok, an upgrade to a board without mods:

1. Download and unpack the zip file from vbulletin.
2. Upload all files from the upload folder to your server (EXCEPT: install.php)
3. Rename config.php.new to config.php and configure it. (Get the information from your old config.php
4. go to www.yoursite.com/yourforumfolder/install/upgrade.php

THATS IT

FOR A BOARD WITH MODS:
Follow steps 1 - 4, then revert templates and redo all your mods.

How about we also insert step 1.5 - Back up your database first!

If you follow the upgrade instructions in the vB Manual (http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/), they will walk you right through the process without a problem.

Actual order....

Download and unpack the zip file from vbulletin.
Backup your Database
Shut your board off via the Admin CP> vBulletin Options
Rename config.php.new to config.php and configure it. (Get the information from your old config.php) (I usually just delete this file and use the old, the config.php rarely changes)
Upload all files from the upload folder to your server (EXCEPT: install.php)
go to www.yoursite.com/yourforumfolder/install/upgrade.php (http://www.yoursite.com/yourforumfolder/install/upgrade.php)
insert your vB customer number, and run the upgrade script.
When finished, open your board via the admincp> vBulletin options. After the upgrade is complete. Go to your admin cp and check template revisions. You'll see a message at the top of your admincp.

All templates specified should be reverted, and then hacks reapplied.

There isn't alot of difference. 3.6.8 contains quite a few bug fixes and additional template hooks for the upcoming vBulletin add-ons.

I was noticing that too. Many added hooks.

You will have to revert some templates and and re-do the template edits for your hacks/mods

so that means i want loose any of my installed hack/mod only thing i have to do is template edits is that rite:D

Peggy

yes that's right. You'll still have all of your mods and hacks. Upgrading will not affect your mods/hacks in any way except the templates that contain the edits for those hacks.

so if i save my current all edited template and just copy and paste it after upgrade that shouldnt be a pro:D

You need to check the list of templates that have mandatory reverts. That's in the release thread at vbulletin.com. You need to revert those templates, then RE-DO the template edits for your hacks/mods.

The templates that are not on that list, you don't have to worry about.

Thanks a Lot Peggy fantastic info & Advise you provide me:rose: for back up i can do from the Admin CP thats it right? and ya kinda confuse abt the my VB forum folder in the public_html do i have to delete that or overwrite or rename the old one and upload the new 3.6.8 and delete the old one after everything goes fine

I use a forum folder as well inside public_html.

All you have to do is open your upload folder, then drag 'n' drop the contents into your forum folder, overwriting everything.

Remember that you need to delete your config.php.new file and the install.php file.
You don't need them for an upgrade unless it's a really MAJOR upgrade. Then you would need the config.php.new file. But this isn't a major upgrade, pretty much just a bug fix, so get rid of those two files and upload everything else.

Can someone clarify exactly what it means to "revert your templates." This is my assumption: When you upgrade, it places new default templates in place. BUT if you have modified templates (for skins or hacks or whatever), these will still be in place too. So by clicking "revert" you go back to the (now updated) default template, meaning you lose any changes you've made to the other default template (the one you've been using). So you need to re-do those code changes in those templates.

Is that right?

And for those templates that are NOT on the mandatory revert list - what happens if I don't revert them? Am I missing out on code that will be needed in the future? Shouldn't I go ahead and revert and deal with them ALL?

You're 100% correct FireProof. :)

Essentially as part of the upgrade process you import a new set of master templates, vBulletin then uses them to compare with what's already in use and throws up warnings if something don't match.

Some times the not matching problem is as simple as an extra HTML line break, I look at the template and if none of the code is changed I leave it as is or try to manually swap out the code.

Peggy

Not correct. When you upgrade, your modified templates are still in place. They do not get overwritten. When you revert the template, it then goes back to the default version, and you have to re-do all of the edits for any hacks/modifications you have installed.

The templates that require a revert, you must do or your forum most likely will not work as intended. What I do is copy my edited template into my html editor - or Notepad - then I revert the template, apply the edits, and save.

For the templates that have changes, but do not require a revert, I go through the list of templates on the release thread, see what changes there are to each template, and if I think it needs doing (such as conditionals, added hooks, etc), I apply the change manually and save. If I don't think I need it, then I click Edit beside the template, and Save.

For example - I have done alot of customizations to my postbit_legacy template. The only thing that changed in that template with this upgrade is they added a template hook. Should I revert the template? Hell no! I found the hook, added it where it needed to be, and saved the template, thus saving me the time and effort to have to re-do all the edits and customizations all over again. There was another template that just needed a code to be wrapped in an if conditional. I didn't revert. I added the if conditional manually and saved the template.

With all upgrades, in your ACP you'll get your list of templates to revert, but not all of them need reverting! They're there because they are not the default templates. If they aren't listed in the release post at vb.com, but do show up in your list of templates in your ACP, you've probably done some editing to it, and all you have to do is click edit and save. Don't revert it, since they have not changed it.

Ahh - got it. Thanks for the tips!! Makes sense.

yes that's right. You'll still have all of your mods and hacks. Upgrading will not affect your mods/hacks in any way except the templates that contain the edits for those hacks.
But there aren't many hacks that didn't require template changes. Basically all my good hacks would require re-templating (if that's a word). I want to upgrade from 3.6.7 to 3.6.8, but it seems too hard as I can't remember all the template changes I needed to make to get my hacks working :(

You need to keep a log of all the template changes you make, so you can easily re-apply the edits after an upgrade.

Since you are in that situation now, run the upgrade, then make note of all the necessary edits to get everything back where you had it. As you make changes down the road, make note of those changes. You may as well do it now, before you add more edits that will leave you even more confused down the road.

Another good thing to do is to mark your template edits with html comments, for example:

<!-- This text is a comment and won't be processed as part of the template -->
<!-- Here starts my template edit for the 1337 h4x I installed on my board -->
In here is the template edit
<!-- Here ends my template edit -->

Notice all the text between <!-- and --> is ignored. That way whenever you find yourself updating templates you'll know when the changes are your own or made by the upgrade.

Something i always do as well is to create a Maintenance and hack revision area within my admin area. In here i log my backups whether it be ftp or database and i also log all my hack activities ie date installed, hack version with attachments so i can always install the current hacks i was using. Many times before i did this i was always struggling to find the correct template changes and even know which were obsolete tables from dead hacks especially pre 3.5.x days.
