Peggy 08-09-2007, 06:29 PM As posted at The vB Geek, purchasing has been closed for the foreseeable future, as Sam (theGeek)deals with an unexpected crisis. Believing that we in the vB community should support each other in times of trouble, I ask that those of you who are registered members of thevbgeek.com please visit the thread below and lend him your good thoughts and best wishes.

Mike54 08-19-2007, 01:59 PM Well, I wish there were some good news to report, but it appears the situation is not improving for Sam. He is now talking about turning over all the scripts to .org for future development.

Peggy 08-19-2007, 02:44 PM oh no...
I truly think that he should approach the developers at .com and offer to sell them the scripts. I would try that before I would release them for free at .org?? Good grief... awesome scripts will die a terrible death there.
Mike54 08-20-2007, 04:48 AM I cannot see how Sam's scripts will ever be adequately supported on .org. If he cannot find someone to help him with tech support now, who will step up to the plate in the future? And let's face it, these are some serious scripts that most people are not going to be able to fly by the seat of their pants.
We spent a lot of time considering how to go with this new forum project of mine. We decided to lean heavily on GARS for this one. Now I'm concerned that we're building things on what very well could be a dying script. We're already around 100 articles into this, after the first week. Now I don't know if it is time to look into an alternative, before we invest much more time building up GARS articles.
I hope Sam will be able to get things in order (for his own sake) and will have the opportunity to start developing things on his own again.

Nice for those of us who have purchased scripts.
Mike54 08-20-2007, 11:24 AM It's looking as if some people are interested in helping him keep things afloat until he can come back 100%. Which to me, is a far better alternative.
In my opinion without proper tech support for his scripts, they're not of much use to me anyway. I ran into an issue with a brand-new GARS installation that was driving me insane (well, alright, more insane). I started sifting through posts on his site and finally found the answer I needed. It was so obscure a fix I would never have cured it on my own. Let's face it, Sam has a fairly active community of his own and it would be tough to hang all of that onto .org and have any kind of reasonable support. The folks at .org already have their hands full.
I hope they can find a way to tread water until Sam can devote his time back to the products. I would hate to see all his work go for naught.
julia44 08-20-2007, 11:27 AM OH NO! Let me head over there and read this.
Peggy 08-20-2007, 11:51 AM If he did anything else at all, sell them to .com so they can incorporate the scripts into vB.
WOW, what a big 4.0 release THAT would be.
Hell³ 08-20-2007, 03:25 PM Well, latest post by theGeek himself says he will try to assemble a dev team in-house. So if you have good coding skills and are willing to help it would be a nice time to make yourself known in the community.
Peggy 08-20-2007, 03:27 PM THAT is wonderful news.
Hell³ 08-20-2007, 03:34 PM The only other alternative he has mentioned if he can't get the right people, is turning the scripts over to the .org, so I guess we have to do our best to send talented people his way.
Peggy 09-26-2007, 11:48 AM This is a major update, posted 2 days ago. Apparently he's no closer to having this worked out, and is just about to send his scripts to the org, where they will surely die a slow death.
*sigh*
http://thevbgeek.com/
Mike54 09-26-2007, 02:28 PM The frustration of this is that he's opting to place them on .org so they will not die a slow death.
Somehow, I'm a bit lost in that logic.
What really stings is I set my new site up around GARS articles. Dynamics is not really an option for how we've established things, as it places all the article content in another location. We've set things up where there is a GARS articles forum and a related, discussion sub-forum.
Best laid plans and all that, eh?
We're going to hang in there with GARS, as long as we are able. When vB outgrows it, the article forums will become regular forums and that will be that. Disappointed? Yep, just a little.
Big Dan 09-26-2007, 03:05 PM I'd be disappointed if I spent money on something and then it was released for free. I was at the site just yesterday looking to buy the newsletter mod. It's still not for sale. I'll be happy to get my hands on it for free but from what I heard the geek was excellent at support, now anyone with his products will be a the mercy of a volunteer.
It a shame that he cannot find a good coder who knows what he's doing and spilt the profits with him while geek works on his problems.
Xhris 09-26-2007, 08:50 PM Yeah I sure hope they don't go to .org for free. Surely there are some users that can help out. I mean some users might know one hack better than another hack. So as a team they should be able to keep his hacks where they are. I offered my hand to him to help if he wants it.
Noppid 09-27-2007, 05:35 AM No one can step up, I mean will be able to step up and help. The org will say, "it's not your code" when a need to post an update comes along. He's creating a tough situation for those that have the code already and may require updates if he don't spell out who has fixing and reposting rights now.
Good luck.
Peggy 09-27-2007, 05:43 AM That's the point tho. To prevent Sam from having to release his scripts to the org.
If he can get coders to support and update them as needed, he won't.
Noppid 09-27-2007, 05:55 AM Problem is, there are not many good coders out there available if ya look at the big picture.
So let's see, you want quality code and code fixes for a paid product done by someone other than the author and for free?
haha. You'll get some quality code that way.
I'm being realistic, not sarcastic here.
Peggy 09-27-2007, 06:03 AM Yeah I understand where you're comin' from. But... miracles do happen, sometimes.
I know, I'm being optimistic...
Noppid 09-27-2007, 09:21 AM It's a good thing to be that way. There is always hope.
Good Luck to him in all his endeavors.
