My preference is 80 - 95%, NOT pixels. Pixels means fixed width and that is poor design in my opinion. The width of my flooring forum works just fine in a monitor with an 800x screen resolution, but it also looks good at 1280x. I hope someone will be able to develop a way to determine the size of the user's viewport and adjust the width of the website to suit. This way, people using, for instance, a 1600x resolution and full-screen display of the browser can still view my site in comfort.

PS: I believe the standard size for those that do use fixed widths is 760px

I don't use pixels for width. The most common width is 90 - 100%

Its easier to make logo's that way, cause in CS3 it goes by px.

Are you talking about a logo, or the top banner that goes the full width of your page? Why would you need a 760px (or 800, or whatever) logo? I'm not an artist, but I've designed a few logos. Take a look at the logos at www.TheFloorPro.com, www.FITScertified.org, www.JMFloorcovering.com and www.enterpriseJM.com. None of those logos has to be the full width of the page. Even if you want some kind of image in the banner, you should be able to design one that is flexible and can adjust to the width of your pages.

I hear people explain how their design dictates a fixed width layout, but the thing that really dictates it is a lack of ingenuity or skill. There really are very few websites that have to be fixed at 800px. Even designs that have a fixed width banner can have other elements that seem to include the outer reaches of the page in the design. I started a design for a guy a couple years ago that never took off, but it does illustrate one way to deal with what could be a run-of-the-mill banner: www.Wm-Eicheberger.com

These are just my opinions, of course.
