I'm looking at putting an advertising policy together for my site. I'd be interested in any views from forum admins as to how they handle the issue of members posting ads on their board.
Well, it all depends, partly on what you mean by ads. I allow my members to post ads selling car parts they have or whatever. For 2 sites, which I actively sell advertising on, I prohibit the posting of ads by members who are also businesses. (I wouldnt sell ads if anyone could promote their business) Here, People are welcome to advertise their services (so long as it isnt spammy stuff)
SO it depends on their needs.
I have a very clearly written TOS that every member agreed to when they signed up. I simply remind them of the section of the TOS they violated and usually just send them a warning via the infractions system if it's a real user. If it's a business, I also post a link to the sponsorship/advertising page where they can place banner ads.

Still a work in progress.. what concerns me a bit is it's pretty blunt - is it too negative and off-putting? Even my regular members seem nervous to comment

That looks pretty good for sites that facilitate private sales as part of the deal.
My biggest challenge is I really need to keep advert posts out of my forum RSS feed - which means keeping ads out of public posts on the forum. There are quite a few sites that are syndicating the RSS feed (mostly without my permission, but it's good for new traffic and SEO so I'm not complaining).
