Attachment Storage Type, change from Database to File System

I can not for the life of me change it from Database to File System.

I've gone into my web hosting C Panel and created a folder off the root:
    home/htdocs/attachments
    Which is actually http://www.mywebsite.com/attachments

    I've changed permissions to 0777 for home/htdocs/attachments

    http://www.mywebsite.com/attachments don't work!
    http://mywebsite.com/attachments don't work!
    /mywebsite.com/attachments don't work!
    mywebsite.com/attachments don't work!
    /home/htdocs/attachments don't work!
    home/htdocs/attachments don't work!
    /htdocs/attachments don't work!
    htdocs/attachments don't work!
    /attachments don't work!
    attachments don't work!

"We attempted to write a test file to (whatever I enter), but we were unsuccessful. Please verify that the web server has write/delete permissions for this path."

What the heck am I doing wrong?

If you're on a cpanel server the path is always:

    /home/username/<folder name>/

You may want to rethink putting in a public directory like public_html or htdocs. If it's public, anyone can go around the vB attachment permissions and view them.

If you have ssh access - Go to the directory you've made and type "pwd" without the quotes, it will tell you the full path of where you're at.

Please note the part bolded in Dan's quote. It means that you need to have command line access via a secure session. If you don't have it, then typing it in your browser won't do anything.

The secure mode in your php is off?, your vbulletin is setup accordingly with this php setting? If you can't figure this out, give us a holler.

Created the attachments folder under the forums folder and chmod it 0777.
In vBulletin ACP I entered the following:
    /home/username/forums/attachments/
    Same error:
We attempted to write a test file to /home/username/forums/attachments, but we were unsuccessful. Please verify that the web server has write/delete permissions for this path.

Ok, I've been trying to do my part in this but I've come to the conclusion I’ve done way TOO much damage to the old brain cells years ago so I'm "givin' you a holler". HELP!

Don't I have write/delete permissions for the path since the forum is working perfectly?

Ok, go to your maintenance section, it's the last one in the left menu on the ACP, then pick the View PHP info at the bottom (as you can see this is literally the last option available , ok, resuming...) then when it shows you the page with a lot of tech mumbo jumbo that only a true geek would love, use your browser's find function and look for "safe_mode", check the value, must be "on" or "off".

Then go to your vbulletin options, back at the top of the left menu, where most reputable admins reside, go to the Server Settings and Optimization Options, then look for the Safe Mode Upload Enabled option, set it to yes or no accordingly with the "safe_mode" that we looked upon earlier.

If your safe mode is ON, you need to check the path and the permissions of the temp directory, in the next option.

If your safe mode is OFF, you dont need to do anything else.

If your safe mode has been OFF this whole time, then you need to double check the path, if it is inside your forum directory, you don't use the full path, just put the directory name (vb is sometimes finicky like that), if it's not inside your forum path, and you have tried every possible combination of valid paths, then... I'm afraid we're out of ideas, you might want to put a support ticket at vB.com

WRONG! But I do appreciate you trying.

It was simply "attachments" without quotes, back slashes, forward slashes or anything with the folder attachments under the forums folder as in:
    http://www.mydomain.com/forums/attachments

set the path in vBulletin ACP to /attachments
It tacks it onto the forum path set in config.php
