Think of it as a popularity contest for stuff on the web. Or viral marketing.

Suppose you create some great Top 10 List you think everyone would like. You submit it to Digg and it comes up as "upcoming news". Others see it, read it, and if THEY like it - they "digg it". The more diggs you get, the more popular. Get enough Diggs and it gets on the front page for tons of eyeballs to read and click through to your site. And I guess search bots to follow as well.

Just go to www.digg.com and you'll see those are the "top stories" on the front page and their respective number of Diggs.

... and your server is probably going to crash under the traffic spike

A side note - By all accounts it's generally not a good idea to Digg your own stuff - apparently there's a horde of Digg "locals" that hunt that sort of stuff down - and they trash you as easy as it is to "dig" you.

Yep - good warning. I've read of folks having their accounts banned and threads dugg down from trying to do this.

Forget what I said ^. I've installed this add-on to my new site, TalkOhio, and love it!
First and foremost, I wasn't even thinking of the backlinks. I can't think of a faster way to gain exposure for your site than this.

We get ALOT of traffic because of add-on. So far, it's not amounted to much as far as gaining alot of members, but with the exposure, I'm sure that will change eventually.

I'd recommend this for just about any site.

Once again, I agree it's a great tool, but I still say when we think like webmasters, we forget our main audience. Most of the normal folks out there could care less about the tools we think are great, or should be great.

This is another Idea that is great for webmaster forums and the visitors to them.

But, in my experience, regular general topic members could care less.

Even with nofollow, you add 15 outgoing links to each thread page.

I made this hack months ago. I used it for months too. Not one submit that I could track.

My hack was not a pull down. It put the button to use the feature very prominently in the post.

I guess it can't hurt, but it's not worth 15 links even with nofollow.

I have been reading a lot about nofollow. It's not everything everyone thinks it is.

If you submit to all of them, then yes you have 15 outgoing links - per person.

However, I'm in the process of removing the least popular ones. I'll end up with 5, maybe 6.

Average members may not care about something like this, I do agree. But you also have the other kind of member who wants to see the site grow and is willing to help do so. That's what I have on TalkOhio now - a good core group who is helping to spread the word via their blogs, posts on other sites, submitting the site to directories, submitting the more important posts to these social bookmarking sites, and the traffic has been great.

Now to convert that traffic into members......

Yeah, that sounds like a decent compromise, remove some of them.

It's nice as a pull down too. Maybe I'll reconsider.

Problem is, you have to remove them from the xml file, not the drop down, and I'm afraid to screw it up
