Setting Up Your vBulletin Forum

Setting Up Your vBulletin Forum

Setting up your vBulletin forum is pretty easy to do, even for the first time novice. Jelsoft gives pretty good instructions on how to install your vBulletin forum in the installation package. You should take the time to read those instructions, take your time, and follow them.

This article is about things you should consider when setting up things such as creating forums, usergroup options, basic vBulletin options and other important settings.

vBulletin Options

vBulletin Options (ADMIN CP> vBulletin Options) covers the basics of the forum operation. Lets look at some of the more important of these.

General Settings

Meta Keywords - This is where you enter keywords for your forum. These keywords will be displayed to search engines. You should choose 8-10 keywords and keyword phrases.
Meta Description - This is the description of your forum that will be read by search engines. You should make this2-3 sentences long and it should describe your community.

Cookies and HTTP Header Options

Time-Out for Cookie - This is the time in seconds that a user must remain inactive before any unread posts are marked read. This setting also controls how long a user will remain on Who's Online after their last activity. I would set this to 1800 or more. 1800=30 minutes.

Style & Language Settings

Store CSS Stylesheets as Files? -You should select this to yes. It speeds up your forum a bit.
Use Legacy (Vertical) Postbit Template - You can choose how a post looks. You have 2 choices. Here are some screenshots to help you decide. Most choose to use the Legacy Postbit, but you can choose either.
